A viable CE-certified electrolysis system with an output of 1 MWel was designed, built and tested in realistic conditions at the ZSW in the “Electrolysis Made in Baden-Württemberg” project. It benefited from the input of over 40 enterprises in Baden-Württemberg which contributed expertise and hardware to the planning and construction.
The system was designed in the form of a modular kit with a view to subsequent industrial roll-out and scaling.
Work began on the concept and plans for the demonstration system “Made in Baden-Württemberg” at the start of the project in April 2020. The contracts for the components and assemblies were awarded from the end of 2020 onwards in public procurement processes. The system was put into operation in the figurative sense by government minister Hoffmeister-Kraut at the beginning of August 2022. The demonstration facility was presented to the enterprises involved on 18 July 2023 when the closing event was held at the ZSW at the end of the project.

Enterprises from Baden-Württemberg were able to incorporate their own process parts and electrical components (e.g. containers, pumps, valve systems, power electronics, safety features and equipment, control systems) and also manufacturing techniques into the demonstration system, thereby helping to develop an improved, standardised electrolysis system technology with a high share of added value from Baden-Württemberg.
The enterprises involved had the opportunity to test their own components in an application environment, gain publicity for them and ultimately include them in their product portfolio.
